FROM OUR STATUTES… OUR HISTORY 1 The Franciscan Sisters of Mary (hereafter called the Association) seeking to become a Private Association of the Faithful, are Roman Catholic women who voluntarily desire to create a closer bond with the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, East Peoria, Illinois, so that whilst under its direction and taking part in its spiritual formation, it strives towards the fulfillment of Christian life and to actively participate in the apostolic mission of the Church. 2 The Association had its beginning on May 30th, 2006 as a result of a meeting of six sisters who had been in temporary vows or final profession in a pious association which had not maintained its diocesan status. These sisters, not wishing to return to secular life, requested a meeting with Bishop Daniel Jenky of the Diocese of Peoria, and Father Roberts, judicial vicar of the same diocese, who graciously consented to allow them to continue as religious. The sisters renewed their commitment to religious life in St. Mary’s Cathedral, diocese of Peoria, on that same date, witnessed by Fr. Roberts. 3 The Association acts on the basis of the Code of Canon Law. (Canons 312-319, 573, 575- 579, and 607). 4 As a pious association, the sisters operate by mutual agreement. At this time, the association is neither a juridical person, nor a non-profit corporation. |
